ELEPHANT RACE

New Brighton Event King Neptune wiM need to keep fade trident well clear of the flanks of fads atoed if he is to have an uneventful elephant ride through the streets of New Brighton later this month. Followed by his court retinue, similarly mounted, King Neptune will lead the lumbering procession to the New Brighton sound shell, which will be the saddling paddock for an elephant rr.ce.

The elephant procession and race at New Brighton will be held on Saturday. February 23, the day after a similar race is held in the city. The race will commence about 10.30 a.m. The task of getting the eight elephants from a circus in Hagley Park to New Brighton poses a problem for the race organisers. A local contracting firm has been called in to provide two low loaders, towed by tractors. Three elephants, including six-and-a-ha>lf-ton Alice, will stand cm one, and four fivetons elephants on the other. The smallest elephant, weighing only half a ton, will be carried by truck. Outside New Brighton, the elephants will be unloaded, and then ridden along Seaview road and back streets to finish ait the sound-shell. They will then be saddled ready tor an elephant race, with New Brighton personalities as riders.
