Kaikoura Ewe Fair Sound, If A Little Erratic

All classes of ewes met a sound but possibly a little erratic sale when one of the first ewe fairs of the season was held at Kaikoura yesterday. The better class of older ewe selling to about 50s was in particularly strong demand, and appeared to be distinctly dearer than late Addington rates, taking into account extra freight charges that would be incurred in getting these sheep to Christchurch. Two-tooth ewes all sold well, but were about in line with late rates, making up to 84s. s *

The. whole of the entry was taken up by districts from Renwick, near Blenheim, to Ashburton.

The entry totalled 9148 head, axnfnced with 11309 last year, and included 2860 two-tooth ewes <3025 last year), 4380 older ewes (5623), 1733 lambs (25®), and 175 wethers (96). After a mild winter and favourable spring and summer the ewes came forward in excellent order, and persons who have followed this sale tor years said that the ewes had seldom looked better. The sale started strongly, the first pen of 79 two-tooths from C- A. McGregor (Greenhills) reaching 84s, which proved to be the top price of the day. It was 14s higher than the top money paid tor young ewes last year and was more than 26s better than the best sale made by Mr McGregor last year. Sales of two-tooths were quite regularly made between 70s and 80s, and few sales were made at less than 60s. While some

of the medium class of twotooths may have appeared fairly reasonable at times they were still bringing about Addington rates if extra freight charges were taken into account.

Appreciation The best of the selection brought from 70s to 78s, with an odd sale at up to 84s, average to good realised from 60s to 68s, and plain and ordinary sorts ranged from 47s to 555. Compared with the sale a year ago there was a general appreciation, and in some cases it was as much as 20s for comparable sheep, but over 12 pens sold yesterday and similar sheep entered last year there was a gain of 15s. The feature of the older ewe market was the inquiry for the best sheep in the entry, with a number of sales being made at about 45s to 50s. These were reckoned to be in advance of Addington rates. Medium and plainer ewes were selling about late rates in the 30s to 40s range. Here, however, the sale was erratic, and while some vendors showed substantial advances on their sales last year, for others prices showed a relatively small appreciation. The sale was nevertheless sound, with the better class of ewe about 10s to 15s dearer than a year ago and the medium sort 5s to 10s better.

Best four-year-old ewes brought from about 42s to 50s. with average to good at 32s to 365; best five-year-olds from 38s to 46s with average at 30s to 36s and others at down to 245; end best four and five-year-olds 40s to 48s. with average to good at 33s to 39s and others at 14s to 225.

Widespread Buying Hardly a pen was passed all day and ewes were purchased for districts including Renwick. Ward. Rangiora, Kaiapoi. Little River, Annat. Oxford, and Ashburton. Apart from his market topping sale of two-tooths at 84s, C. A. McGregor also realised 80s for 70 and 78s for 55. A. W. Wilson (Glen Tul) had 221 which brought 81s and another 96 at 775. For 68 R. F. G. Latter ;K:ncaid Downs) also received Four-year-old ewes ranged up to 50s which was paid for 97 from F. D. Gibson (Te Haumi), and 76 from R. A. Howard (Glenburni. C. A. McGregor also had 217 at 475. The top price for five-year-olds was 46s for 89 from F. D. Gibson and L. P. Taylor (Mount Ludd) sold 71 at 445.

A notable sale of four and five-year-old ewes waa made by the estate C. J. Aitken (Swyncombe). Four hundred of these well-grown well-woolled sheep were taken by the one buyer at 48s, and the balance of 107 were sold for 465. A sizeable selection of mainly ewe lambs also enjoyed a sound sale at fully on a par with recent Addington rates. The best of the ewe lambs sold at 45s to 50s, with good at 40s to 455, and others at 35s to 395. H. C. Acton-Adams (Mahunga) sold 44 at 50s, and 100 from E. R. Wallace (Glen Garry) made 495. Average to good wether lambs ranged from 30s to 37s 6d. The following is a range of values with last year’s figures being given for comparison:— 10R5
