RESCUE FROM SUNKEN CAR

Woman Returns For Brother

(N.Z. Press Association) KAITAIA. Feb. 11. A woman dived back into her submerged car and saved her injured brother after the car had fallen about 50ft into a pool in the stream at Broad - wood. North Hokianga, on Saturday. She is Mrs Euphemia Pell, aged 61, of Kirk street. Grey Lynn, Auckland. She escaped with severe bruises to her legs, body and face. Her brother is Mr Frederick Howard Davis, aged 64, of Ariki street, Grey Lynn. He has a broken shoulder, dislocated rib cartilages, cute and lacerations to his face, but is progressing satisfactorily in Kaitaia Hospital. After a car wheel went over the edge of the road. Mrs Pell’s car rolled over several times and landed sideways in the pool, which was about 6ft deep. Fortunately, the windscreen broke and the car filled with water so that she was able to get a window down and squeezed through to the surface. She then dived down into the flooded car and found her brother, who was apparently unconscious, but recovered sufficiently to push while she dragged him to the surface by his injured arm.

She was assisted in bringing her brother ashore by a passing motorist and they were later taken to hospital. Mrs Pell was discharged after treatment.
