TROTTING FALSEHOOD EQUALS TRACK RECORD

Royal Meeting Triumph For Belfast Trainer (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, February 11. The Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Hutt Park tonight proved a triumph for the Belfast trainer, G. S. Donald. Falsehood, a member of his team driven by D. C. Watts, ran out a decisive winner, while Donald drove another member of his team, Gildirect, into third place. Second place went to Urrall, driven by W. E. Lowe, for whom Donald had trained and driven Caimbrae to win the previous race, the Buckingham Handicap. Falsehood paced the mile and a half in 3min 9 l-ssec, which equalled Samantha’s previous track record, established in 1962.

Falsehood went to the front at the end of five furlongs after Gildirect had slowed the pace down slightly. From then on he was pacing comfortably and he opened up a short lead with about two furlongs left. He maintained his advantage to the post, where he was two lengths clear.

Raced by his Greymouth breeder, Mr J. Steel, Falsehood has been one at the outstanding pacers in the Dominion this season. He has had 19 starts for eight wins and 10 placings.

Falsehood was runner-up to Lordship in the New Zealand Cup in November and was considered by many to have been a little unlucky. On February 2 he was a good third in the Dunedin Festival Cup. Falsehood is unlikely to do much more racing in New Zealand as negotiations have been opened for him to race in an international pacing series at Yonkers Raceway, New York, in May. If Falsehood makes the trip it is expected that Watts will make the trip with him. The judge, Mr J. O’Brien, caused a surprise with his first announcement of the placings. He announced that Gildirect had been placed second and Grouse, No. 3, third.

After the judge had inspected a photograph of the finish he altered the placings to Urrall, No. 3A, second, and Gildirect third. Fifth Win The odds-on C aimbrae gained his fifth successive win since being trained at Belfast by C. S. Donald when he was successful in the Buckingham Handicap, first leg of the double at Hutt Park tonight. There was considerable merit in his effort as he was a little slow to became properly balanced and he must have been 30 yards from the lead at the end of a furlong. Cairnbrae rushed to the front at the end of four furlongs and immediately slowed the pace down. Once into the straight he was untroubled to draw out and win most convincingly. Raced by the Hinds trainer, W. E. Lowe, Caimbrae is an aged gelding by U. Scott from a smart mare, Safeguard. Cairnbrae had shown extreme speed in some of his earlier races this season, but before joining Donald’s team he had become most erratic at the start of his races. In his five starts for Donald he has shown no signs of making a serious mistake. Desperate Finish When, which, like Falsehood. may later this year race at Yonkers Raceway, fought out a desperate finish with Our Own and beat her narrowly in the second leg of the double, the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap. They were together over the final seven furlongs and it was not until the last 25 yards that victory for the favourite became certain. When beat Our- Own by a long neck after the most thrilling race of the night Ine Cairnbrae-When double paid £6 10s 6d for £l. The weather was showery, but the track was in good order. The meeting opened before a comparatively small crowd, but the course was packed before the arrival of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at about 9 p.m. On-course the totalisator handled £67.619 15s, including £8144 15s on the double The off-course turnover was £134.058, including £59,325 10s on the double. The attendance was 10,144. considerably fewer than had been expected. Led Out Dandy Andy and Doctor Dan began very quickly and led out by three lengths from Guineas in the Buckingham Handicap. The pace slackened a little at the end of about three furlongs and Cairnbrae was pulled out, quickly joining the leaders. Doctor Dan attempted to go with him, but Cairnbrae soon shook him off and went to a clear lead. Junior Royal improved to be third behind Cairnbrae and Doctor Dan racing to the straight, with Dandy Andy and Stormlight handiest of the others.

None of them could get up to Cairnbrae, which won with something in hand by two lengths from Stormlight, another slow beginner. Doctor Dan. which had every chance, battled on for third half a length back, with a length to Guiness, which came home strongly. Junior Rnval was another length

back fifth, ahead of Morano Boy, with a gap to Axis and Dandy Andy. Axis and Junior Royal broke at the start. Met Trouble Jay Ar broke at the start of ttie Queen Elizabeth Handicap and Flying Fiver appeared to meet trouble. Grouse and Oreti also gave ground. Samantha was first ou*, but ait the end of about a furlong Gildirect took control. With nine furlongs left Gildirect was closely attended by Scottish Light, Samantha, Master Alan, Urrall, Gentry, Falsehood and Jay Ar. Gildirect slowed the pace leaving the straight and Falsehood sprinted up to take the lead after Scottish Light had farced ham three wide.

Falsehood continued at a strong pace and there was little other change in the running. Falsehood sprintei dear by two lengths near the two furlongs and led Gildirect, Scottish Light, Ur-

rail, Samantha and Gentry into the straight. Falsehood was not seriously troubled to hold his lead of two lengths at the finish. Urrall beat Gildirect by a neck for second. Samantha was a close fourth ahead of Master Alan, with two lengths to Oreti, Gentry and Grouse, with a gap to Scottish Light, Jay Ar and Flying Fiver. Second Leg Spark Gap broke but recovered quickly just after the start of the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap, while Spinster Scott, Front Line and Resistor broke in the first furlong. Pohutukawa broke art the end of three furlongs.

t Mighty Brigade led out ; from Spark Gap, Poupette : and Our Own, hurt at the end of half a mile the lasti named took control. When t made a splendid beginning from 30 yards and art the end Jof five furlongs she had worked into fifth position. When was forced three wide j with nine furlongs left and . two furlongs later she joined Our Own in front. D. G. ; Jones, the driver of Our ’ Own, was content to allow J When to take a slender ad- ' vantage but not sufficient to enable her to. get over to the ’ rails. Our Own led by about half a length from the three furi longs to the straight where • Mighty Brigade had moved into third place. Poupette, > Control and Wairau King I were almost in line next, with the others starting to drop away.
