Early Crowd At Wharf
Three hundred people lined the barriers at Coronation Pier, Mount Maunganui, at 6 a.m. before the Queen and Duke were due to step ashore and by 9.30 the
crowd had swelled to more than 1500.
The sound of pipes and drums welcomed the Royal couple to the town exactly on schedule.
The Queen’s dress was of emerald green tussore, banded at the shoulders and belted with white tussore. Her hat was an emerald green stitche ’ beret of the same material. The Duke wore a brown lounge suit.
They were driven to the Memorial Park where 5000 people waited for the public welcome.
Twelve ballet girls dressed as Greek maidens danced in front of the Queen scattering pink and white rose petals from shallow baskets. After civic officials had been presented, the Royal couple took their seats in the flower-bedecked soundshell and Her Majesty received a bouquet. The Queen and Duke next visited the Tauranga domain, where 20,000 children had been massed. As the Royal car came into sight there was a tremendous burst of cheering—the loudest of the day.
