Hitch-Hiking
Sir.—Many miles of my travels throughout England, the Continent, Australia and New Zealand have been covered in a much more interesting way by meeting the people of the lands and learning of their locality and way of life, hatch-hiking. I would not enjoy travelling with groups on buses and having to stick to a time-table, or glueing my eyes to the road behind a steering wheel (as all roads look the same!) Those who have never "hitched” cannot appreciate the sense of freedom and adventure in not knowing how, if, or when you’ll reach your destination. Drivers don’t have to feel compelled to help us travel, but those who do. enjoy our company, and I have made many friends and been given great hospitality on "the road ’’ Being foot-sore and cold and wet are all part of it, but I wouldn't swop it.—Yours, etc., GLOBE-TROTTER.
