RECORD AIDS HUNGRY
£5OO Earned For Campaign
As the result of a record made recently by the choir of the St Albans Presbyterian Church, the Freedom from Hunger Campaign has benefited by a donation of £5OO. This was reported to members of the Christchurch branch of the Pan Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association by the choir’s conductor (Mr M. G. Smith) last evening.
Originally begun last year to record a specially-written hymn commemorating the campaign, the venture has since reaped unexpected benefits. From the preliminary £5 profit made from the record’s sales among choir members, sales have now increased to a total of 1500 throughout New Zealand. Copies of the record, “Reach Out In Pity,” have been sent to the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson), the Kremlin. President Kennedy, and the British Broadcasting Corporation. Produced and distributed by volunteers, the record contains four hymns sung by the choir of 52 with the soloists Heather Taylor, Robert Mclntosh, Jean Anderson, and Gwenyth Millar. Last evening Mr Smith sang the specially-written hymn, accompanied by Constance Mclntosh, who accompanies the choir on the record. Mr Smith said members of the church have been assisted with publicity and distribution by members of other churches in the area. The choir is now planning a house-to-house appeal to promote sales. The record is available at the Presbyterian Bookroom. Charles Begg and Company. Ltd., and the Farmers’ Cooperative Association in Christchurch.
