Crew Of Mixed Nationalities
Scandinavian vessels, and particularly those from Sweden, often have crews of many nationalities. The Swedish mercantile marine recently engaged a large number of Spaniards in its ranks because conditions ashore are so prosperous in Sweden that it is hard to obtain crews from its own nationals.
The modem, 12.676-ton, Swedish motor tanker Oscar Gorthon was discharging gas oil and aviation spirit from Geetong at Lyttelton yesterday. There are several nationalities in her crew. Countries represented are: Sweden, Norway, Denmark. Germany, Belgium, England, Spain, Portugal, the P’hilippins and the Sechelles Islands. Among the 45 aboard are two women, both married to ship’s officers One is a Dane and the other Swedish. The Oscar Garthom, registered in Helsingborg, is commanded by Captain J. E. Lilifors, of Monsteras in central Sweden. She is of 12,706 tons gross, with a deadweight capacity of 19,000 .tons. The Ooscar Gorthon sailed for Capetown last evening.
