RACING Bodkin Schooled After Fast Run

Bodkin, a hack, soundly, beat Gay Filou in one of the best mile gallops at Riccarton yesterday, and then showed fair promise in four runs over the two pony hurdles. • Gay Filou finished two lengths behind Bodkin, but this was in character for the Le Filou gelding, one of the form runners for the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Riccarton next week.

Bodkin, ridden by the lightweight. A. Swanson, won this mile gallop on the inside of the trial grass by two lengths, and hurried over the distance in Imin 43sec. They went fairly evenly all the way; Bodkin ran the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Gay Filou was ridden by M. J. Skelton, whose brother, W. D. Skelton, is the race rider. T. Wilson rode Bodkin when he was schooled later. Bodkin’s race form has been disappointing. Few, if any, of the other hacks at Riccarton show more ability in training. Zinder (Wildermoth) and Mhor 'Hadfield) worked up to a strong pace near the end of their mile. They ran the distance in Imin 44 3-s*ec, the last half in 49 l-ssec. Form Horse Zinder will be one of the popular fancies for the Balmoral Handicap at the Royal meeting after two sound performances at Trentham. Mhor has not raced since December 29, when he easily won the Levels Hack Handicap at Washdyke. After a slow first furlong. Manana (Wildermoth) did well to record 50 l-ssec for his half-mile. K. Reggett will ride this smart three-year-old in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Riccarton. The two-year-old. Standout (Wildermoth) anad Omasong (Reriti), worked up to speed after passing the halfmile and finished a good gallop abreast in 51 2-ssec. The leading jockey, R. J. Skelton, will ride Omasong and his stablemate, Apache, at the Royal meeting. Certainly (A. H. Eastwood) also recorded 51 2-ssec for her half-mile. She is being prepared for the Windsor Castle Handicap, seven furlongs. at the Royal meeting.

Her Ashburton run was appointingFonteroy (Beck) and Seaend (Low) made fast time for seven furlongs on the plough. They dashed over the distance in imin 28sec, after running the first half-mile in 50sec.

Fonrteroy, an impressive winner at Washdyke in hie only start so far, should make an impression against the hack sprinters at the Royal meeting. Vault (Mein) and Hullabaloo (Beck) started near the mile, and sped home from the seven furlongs in Imin 28 1-5 sec. They finished close behind Royal Pic (Low) which joined in near the five furlongs, and ran the final three in 38sec. Other gallops:— Seven furlongs.—Marlborough (Beck) and Pleasant Ways (McCann) Imin 30 3-5 sec, last three, 37 4-ssec; Studio (Reggett) and Gracefield’s Pride (Hadfield) Imin 3fisec, last three 38 4-seec; Compensate (T. Wilson) imin 33 l-seec, last three 37 2-5 sec. Six furlongs.—Share (Mein) and Balance (Williams) Imin

22 2-ssec, last three, 39 1-5 sec; Purr Along (Low) length to Ginger Mac (Beck) and Lady Cavair (Daly) Imin 19 4-ssec, last three, 38 4-5 sec; Glentarkin (Low’) and Town Talk (Hadfield) Imin 18 2-ssec, last three 39sec. Three furlongs.—Stylish (Beck) and Derailment (Mein) 36 4-seec; Misjudge (A. Eastwood), Scuffle (Mein) .and Jaykay (Beck) 37 4-ssec; Pica Leigh (Messenit) 38sec, keenly; Printer (A, Eastwood) 41 4-seec; On Account (Swanson) and Barwood (Donovan) 37 4-ssec, last three of six furlongs.
