Varied Demand For Rams At Annual Flock Fair

Flock rams met a varied demand when the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s flock ram fair began at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday with the sale of mutton breeds. A very much larger selection of Dorset. Downs were keenly competed for at prices only slightly lower than for the handful sold last year. Well brought-out South Dorset Downs also sold strongly and South Suffolks gained slightly on last year’s level of values. In contrast, inquiry for English Leicesters was at a very low ebb and only 11 were sold out of an offering of 110 and sales of Border Leicesters amounted to less than a third of the number purchased at last year’s sale. Southdowns, which comprised the bulk of the day’s offering, returned a slightly higher average price than last year, but values were still at very modest levels and the sale was far from animated.

Of the 2253 rams of all breeds which came before buyers just on half found buyers at auction. The total number purchased was 1124. compared with 1224 on the same day last year, 1360 in 1961 and 1768 in 1960.

Top price of the sale was 75gns paid for a Southland Southdown ram and the next highest price was 'lOgns which was paid tor five Dorset Downs in three sales. Over two of the three runs of Southdown rams a rather higher proportion of rams changed hands at auction than was the case last year, but over the concluding run inquiry dropped off markedly and sales were rare. Nearly all of the catalogued entry of 1866 Southdowns came forward and 51 per cent, of these found buyers under the hammer, compared with 48 per cent, or 1041 of the 2152 catalogued last year.

Higher Average The average price for the 955 rams sold under the hammer was just under lOgns, which was one guinea higher than last year. Over the first two runs of the sale when 428 and 361 rams were sold, the average was close to lOgns, and in the third run when 166 found buyers, the average price level dropped to just over 9Jgns. But the range of values remained at fairly low levels with the best rams making from 16gns to 21gns, apart from one sale average to good rams from 12ghs to 15gns and average 7gns to llgns. The top price of the day was paid in the second run for a single ram from D. H. Robertson and Company, Merrydowns, Gore, at 75gns. C. McCaskey (Waipara) received the second highest price of 21gns and D. N. Campion (Rakaia) had a sale at 20gns. Last year the top price for a southdown was 35gns. Some vendors secured slightly better averages for their teams of rams than last year, but others recorded lower averages. One of the most successful vendors was D. C. McMillan (Irwell), whose average for 26 rams was almost 14gns. with prices ranging from 12gns to 15jgns. Last year for 24 his average was lljgns. The estate W. J. C. Sheat (Dunsandel) also averaged nearly 14gns for 16 rams selling at lOgns to 15gns. A year ago 19 rams from this property averaged just under lOgns. For 10 rams making from 9gns to 21gns, C. McCaskey averaged 13gns. R. L. A. McMillan, of Sudeley, Irwell. sold 24 ranging from 12gns to 13Jgns at an average of slightly more than 12gns. which was almost identical with his average for 21 last year. D. N. Campion averaged 12gns for 22 rams selling at Bgns to 20gns. Last year he sold 13 at an average of lOgns. The usual big team of rams was to hand from T. E. M. Brooks (Brookside) and for 41 the average was just over 12gns, compared with lOJgns for 33 last year. These rams sold from lOgns to llgns. S. Pearce and Son (Rolleston) averaged almost lOjgns for 22, C. A. Adams (Greendale) averaged lOgns for 17, Scott Bros. (Dunsandel) 9.6gns for 27. and J. S. Brooks (Irwell), 9.7gns for 28. In the sale of breeds other than Southdown there was a marked swing in demand away from Border Leicesters and English Leicesters and an increased inquiry for Dorset Downs and South Dorset Downs. South Suffolk also seemed to meet a slightly better inquiry. , Five Dorset Downs made 40gns, South Dorset Downs sold up to 25gns and South Suffolk also made up to 25gns. Apart from the brick Dorset Down sale, bidding was restrained and it slumped to a very low ebb on the Leicesters. Border Leicester The Border Leicester sale was a slow and dragging affair with very little interest taken by a small gallery. The number of rams sold was less than a third of last year's figure at auction and there was very little variation in price. In the first run only 14 out of 96 rams found a buyer under the hammer, and only four were sold in the second run of 47. The average for the 18 sold was just under Signs, compared with just over Bgns last year for 61 sold out of the offering of 221.

The top price was only 14gns. paid for a single ram from J. D. Paterson (Darfield) and the estate W. B. Scott (Coldstream) sold one at 12gns. Other sales were at 71gns and Bgns. Last year’s top price was 25gns. Dorset Down Dorset Down rams met a brisk inquiry and the demand was bigger than the supply. AU the rams offered were sold at auction and the 22 averaged 23.6gn5, compared with four out of six sold last year at an average of 26gns. The top price, of 40gns was realised for five rams in three sales, four of which were from F. G. Butt (Seddon) whose top price last year was 30gns. A single ram from A. J. R. Johnstone (Cust) also sold at 40gns. With eight rams, Mr Butt averaged 38.3gns, and his lowest price was 35gns. South Dorset Down The demand for Dorset Down type rams was reflected in the strong sale of South Dorset Downs which appeared for the first time in the fair in any quantity. Buyers were selective, however, and unless the rams were well brought out they were passed by. Out of the offering of 63, 27

were sold at an average price of IS.lgns. E. T. McDermott (HalsweH) sold one at 25gns and averaged 21.1gns for 13 and J. G. and R. J. King (Pendarves) averaged 19.4gns for five with one at 23gns. South Suffolk

South Suffolks met quite a sound sale and quality Looked to be a little better than last year. There was a good clearance at auction with 71 out of 78 offered being sold at an average of 13.9gns, compared with 69 out of 76 which averaged 10.6gns last year. Top price of 25gns was paid for one from A. C. Greenwood (Southbridge), who averaged 11.4gns for eight. D. J. and J. Stewart (Rakaia) sold 15 at an average of just under 16gns and a top price of 21gns, and J. A. Baxter (Darfield) averaged 15*,iigns for 21. I. J. Mercer (Leeston) averaged 14.3gns for three. With nine sales H. C. Vanstone (Little River) averaged lllgns.

English Leicesters It was the most dispirited sale of English Leicesters for many years. Only 11 were sold out of an offering of 110. and the average price was nearly 9gns, compared with an average of 7.7gns for 18 out of 67 last year. The slight Improvement in price did not reflect any competition. Only a few sheep were wanted and bids were few and far between. The estate James Reid, Ltd. (Darfield). sold nine out of the team of 29 fielded at Bgns to 12gns. Other Breeds

Two Shropshires sold at 9gns from C. C. Burden (Geraldine) and tour Poll Dorset-Dorset Hom first-cross rams made Bgns for A. G. W. Gardner (Amberley). Mr Gardner also sold two Dorset Hom rams at W’/agns. the top price for the nine sold which averaged 9.4gns. Five Ryelands out of an offering of 16 were sold at Bgns each.
