The foundation’s chairman. Mr D. G. Ball, said today that the selection committee had examined thoroughly these cases and most of the applicants had been advised of its decisions. There have been late applications and others are still under consideration but, so far, the awards number 353. Their amounts vary according to individual circumstances. The awards were generally to Maori children at secondary school level, he said. A number of applicants at university level were soon to be interviewed.
. “The expenditure incurred by these awards to date will not be less than £23,000,” said Mr Ball.
