ASSEMBLY HALL AT CASHMERE
Governor-General To Be Invited
The Governor - General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) will be invited to open the Cashmere High School’s new assembly hall, the school’s board of governors decided yesterday. ■The headmaster (Mr T. H. McCombs) said he thought the hall would be ready towards the end of April. In his report, Mr McCombs said the school had had a reasonable amount of success in the end-of-year examinations, and added that a higher proportion ot successful school certificate pupils than expected had returned. Because of this, there were six lower-sixth classes with a total of 148 pupils, he said. “It is interesting to note that there are more classes in the upper school than in the lower,” said Mr McCombs. The school opened this week with 1079 pupils on the roll and a staff of 43 teachers. "We are fully staffed and all members are fully qualified,” he said. “It is a very satisfying position.” The board accepted the resignation of Miss N. P. Simpson, who was head of the home science department. She was on the staff when the school opened in 1956.
