ADDINGTON YARDS
Move Unlikely
Addington market is unlikely to move from its present site in Deans avenue. The chairman of the City Council's abattoir and reserves committee (Cr. P. J. Skellerup) said yesterday that a meeting was held last week which was attended by the director of reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin), the secretary of the Canterbury Saleyards Company, Ltd. (Mr J. G. Strack) and himself.
Mr Skellerup said that the council had offered to maka land available for the saleyards at Sockburn near ths abattoir, but the company’s view was that it could not meet the cost of moving from its own capital and therefore was not interested unless some form of compensation was paid. The chairman of the company (Mr T. A. McKeUar) said last evening that he would make no comment on the issue over the telephone.
It is understood that the replacement cost of the saleyards would be between £300.000 and £500,000 and the capital otf the company is £BO.OOO.
Cr. Skellerup also said that the suggestion had been made at the meeting that both the saleyards and the abattoir should be moved further out from the city to Templeton or Rolleston but the company's representative had made the same answer of cost.
