MR H. S. HOBBS

Mr Hugh Septimus Hobbs, who throughout his life took a wide interest in musical and church activities, died in Christchurch yesterday. Bom in 1880, Mr Hobbs was educated at East Christchurch primary school, Cathedral Grammar School and Christ’s College. He began his musical career as a treble chorister in the Christchurch Cathedral choir, and was later a bass in the choir. For 15 years he was choirmaster at St Mary’s Church, Merivale, and became a vestryman and synodsman. One of the original members of the Christchurch Liedertafel he enjoyed a long and active membership with that group. Mr Hobbs had a distinguished association with the Cathedral Grammar School; being chairman of the board of governors and president of the Old Boys’ Association. In recognition of his work for the school he was elected a life, member of the association. He was also a board member of Te Wai Pounamu Giris’ College, president of the Representatives' Association, and far 62 years a member of .the Christchurch Savage Chib. As an active participant in the Canterbury Rowing Club he recorded 25 regatta wins. Mr Hobbs is survived by his wife, a daughter (Mrs A. C. Felton) and two sons, Mr J. Hobbs, of Melbourne, and Mr W.
