IHew Zealand Proa Association;

AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. The Minister of Works (Mr Goosman') will retire from politics this year and will not be a candidate at the next Parliamentary elections in November. He has been in the House of Representatives for 25

years, 11 of them as a Cabinet Minister. His announcement that his political career was coming to an end was made at a meeting of the executive of the Piako branch of the National Party.

Mr Goosman first entered Parliament in 1938, when the National Party, a fusion of the former Reform and United parties, contested its first election. He has represented the Waikato. Piako and Waipa constituencies. As a Minister in the National Government, Mr Goosman was responsible for works, railways, transport marine. State hydro, housing construction and civil aviation. He founded the National Roads Board and has served as its chairman. Mr Goosman was born tn Auckland in 1890 and was educated at Mangere. His first job was on a dairy farm and he subsequently was a bush-

man, rharemilker, railway labourer, and farmer.

He took up cream carting with a horse and waggon and from this humble beginning developed one of the biggest eartage businesses in New Zealand. He is now man-

aging-director of W. S. Goosman and Company, a firm specialising in contracting and road-making. He has been one of New Zealand's . most successful .’cehorse owners. Mr Goosman is married, with one son.
