MATRON AS STUDENT
Passed School Certificate (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, January 23. A Napier student, Miss Phyllis Goodwin, , like thousands of other New Zealanders, now has her School Certificate. But there her similarity with students who sat the examination last year ends for Miss Goodwin holds the highly-responsible position of matron at the Napier Hospital. An intense interest in gardening, which developed several years ago, led to Miss Goodwin seeking her School Certificate.
“When this interest developed, I decided to do a short course in horticulture,” she said. “After I had done so I wanted to go on and do something at university. This meant I had to have some sort of certificate showing I was at university level. “So I wrote to the Correspondence School authorities and asked if I might take two years to get University Entrance. Half-way through last year I wondered if I should sit School Certificate as a stepping stone. The authorities thought it a good idea, so I studied and sat.” She passed the examination comfortably, with her best paper being horticulture, which gained her 80 marks. Her other subjects were English. geography, history and biology
