SWIMMING Second N.Z. Record To Miss J. Reid
a talented 13-year-oid swimmer from the Limwood club, Judith Reid, became a favourite for at least two national junior freestyle titles when she clipped o.9sec from the New Zealand junior 220yds record during the fourth session of the Canterbury championships at the Centennial Pod taut night.
It was Miss Reid’s second national mark in five day*. On Saturday night she set a new national mark for the junior girl*’ 440 yard* freestyle. Her fine effort last night eclipsed the time of 2min 31.4 sec established last year by the national champion, Miss A. McMillan (Waikato). For Miss Reid it was virtually a swim against the clock, for her opposition was soon left behind. The swim Inspired fellow competitors to greater heights, in spite of cool temperatures and fields weakened by a large number of scratchings. Nine new Canterbury records were established, bringing the total set so far at the championship* to 27. In the under 14 girls’ section, Miss B. Poulsen set a new figure in a heat of the 55 yards freestyle and further improved on the time in the final. Another competitor in the same age group. Miss N. Clark, who had already broken the 55 yards butterfly record, turned her attentions to backstroke and cut lOsec from the 220 yards time. Spreydon Successes The brilliant Spreydon club all-rounder, Miss L. Cox. bettered her own junior 110 yards butterfly mark, with a New Zealand record only 12 sec away. Two other leading juniors from the same dub. A Harrow and Miss W. Dale set new backstroke records over 220 yards and 110 yards respectively; in both cases the margin of victory was substantial.
One of the most meritorious swims of the session was th»t of W. G. Andrew (Spreydon) in breaking R. Blairs men’s 220yds freestyle record by 3.6 sec. Andrew, who won by half a length of the pool, made his own pace throughout. He
swam an cxcredingly fart firm 110 yd« (ClJmc) and held his apred to win with l«**c to spare from the second man. A. McDonald. Andrew, who waa eenxor champion of Cbrirt'* College last year, la in fine fettle after recent training in Auckland. Mis* S. Pttama mad* a strong finishing buret to pass the former national champion. Mtu L. Norman, and . reUln her women’s 110yds backstroke title, with the 330yds chamCon of the previous night, Mise Harrow, third. Miss Norman's Canterbury record waa never in danger. P. Hay »et a new record for the boys’ under 12 55yds breaststroke and J. Hay failed by only Isec to equal the record of his brother, Michael, in the junior 110yds breaststroke. The performance of the evening was that of W. Pearce. He emerged from the pool wet and breathless after a particularly strenuous duel with J. Hay and R. Bliss to the junior breaststroke event, and immediately started In the 55yds freestyle to win well. Abbreviations used in the results are:— 8., Beckenham: Elmwood: F.. Fendalton: L. Linwood: N. 8..
