Rugby League CLEARANCE REFUSED
Butterfield’s Application (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 23 The New Zealand Rugby League Council tonight refused the 1962 Kiwi hooker, R. J. Butterfield, a clearance so that he could accept a position as player-coach for an Australian club side this winter. Butterfield had been granted a clearance by his league. West Coast, and his club, Brunner. His clearance was refused after Mr W. Telford, the chairman of the national selectors, said that Butterfield would be required for the Kiwi team which will tour Australia between May and July. Two managers and a coach will be sent with the 26 Kiwi players to Australia. Nominations for the position of manager, assistant manager, and coach, close on March 31. The council agreed in principle to a visit from South Africa later this year. It will await further details of th proposed tour. An Australian schoolboy team, open weight and under 15. may tour New Zealand this winter. The National Schoolboy Council has asked for permission to negotiate for a tour by either a New South Wales side or a club team.
