Summer Regent For Trentham First Leg

(From Our Own Iteportsr) WELLINGTON, January 23. Summer Regent, a highly-consistent four*year-old from Te Rapa, has been shaping like a staying star of the future and will be much in demand for the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, the first leg of the TjVB. double at Trentham on Saturday. He made a favourable first impression at the Wellington Cup meeting by running third to Gold Ruth and Moy in the Summer Handicap, one mile and a half, on Monday.

tt wm tete when Ms apprentice rider menaced to find a run for him from the middle of the field and at the end he wre quickly reducing the gap to the winner and runner-up, which had come to the front outride the furlong. Summer Regent has 7-4 in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. The star Mayen are to meet in the weight-tor-ege Titenthatn Stakes earlier in the day, and Gold Ruth is the Wellington Racing Chib Handicap top-weight with 8-7. She carried 7-U|, including Ijlb overweight, when she won on Monday.

Gold Ruth runs out a mile and a half very gamely and with average luck in a large field she should again be a strong contender. Cool came to the top last year as a miler, but won the Woodville Cup over a middle distance before his four-year-old racing was over. He won over 11 furlongs at Levin in December, and finished fifth in the Auckland Cup on January 1. Cool ran against the milers in the George Adams Handicap on Monday He started 26 wide, made a terrific run up into the bunch behind Rapido in the first half mile, but was never better than

three wide, and, like the others feeding the chare after the champton three-yeer-oM, he faded from outride the

furtong. Cool finiahed fourteenth, but he could atiU be regarded ae a prospect over a middle distance which will be started on ait a comparatively leisurely pace. Ruato rates a Bound chance on his Wellington Cup fifth and his Auckland Cup second. He did not find it all plain sailing in the Wellington Cup, being checked in hia run in a mix-up near the three furlongs. On latest form. Fils d’Or, Gay Defoe, and Windvale Lad have very slight chances indeed, but Blue Blade will be at less generous odds than

when he ran third in the Wellington Cup. Commodore Roberts was a disappointing fttvourito in the Summer Handicap. He had to be checked to keep off the beds of one of hia rivals after two furlongs, and galloped ungenerously afterwards. At his previous start he was a close, second to Floutulla at Avrmdate, and beat Summer Regent (third). Floutulla is engaged again, but hia stablemate. Summer Regent, looks a stronger prospect My Contact the Summer Handicap fourth, and Sybeau. which was fifth, will be two more strong runners for Waikato stabfea. Any easing in tiie ground will their chances.
