LAWN TENNIS Wind Affects Play Of Two Seeded Juniors

Conditions have more effect on tennis than they do on most fames and two young players who proved they could adapt themselves to a gusting wind scored wins over seeded competitors at the national junior championships at Wilding Park yesterday. Most notable was the defeat of the secondseeded under 17 girl, B. Vercoe, of Auckland, by C. Johnston, of Waikato, who won theirthird round singles, 6-3, 6-4. Only last Saturday Miss Vercoe won both the under 17 singles and doubles titles at the Canterbury junior championships.

The other so-called upset was in the under 17 boys’ a ngle* when J. Mitctek, at Canterbury, put out another Canterbury player, D. Thom, seeded fifih. Mitchell won, 7-5. 6-2. Thia was not particularly surprising because Mitchell is ranked third on the Canterbury boys’ under 17 Ladder and Thom is ranked sixth. Many matches in singles, doubles and mixed double* v ere completed yesterday, even though rain caused a feo>ppage for an hour between 12.30 and 130. Before the rain, the tricky wind gave a number of players considerable difficulty but the afternoon's matches were played in calm conditions. No under 19 girts* singles were played because they had reached the quarter-finals the previous day, but the third rounds of each of the under 19 boys' singles, under 17 boys' singles and under 17 girls' singles found the quarter-finalafts for those sections. Quarter-Finalists The under 19 boys are P. Thomson (Waikato), seeded first, v. R. Bird (Manawatu), eighth; S. Tietjens (Auckland). fourth, v. C. Johnson (North Shore), unseeded; J. S. Halligan (Auckland), second, v. G. Ford (Canterbury), unseeded; and D. Simmonds (Auckland), third, v. A. Brook* (Canterbury), seventh. Thomson, Bird, Halligan, Ford and Brooks won comfortably in straight sets yesterday but the others were caused some difficulty by Canterbury opponents. The very steady W. Edgecombe, from Lincoln, took Johnson to three sets, 8-1, 3-6, 6-1, and R. McCutcheon, winner of the Canterbury under 19 title last week, made a fine recovery against Tietjens but could not finish off the second set. McCutcheon had a 3-1 lead In the first set, but he dropped it. 4-6; he was down 2-5 in the second set. caught up to 5-5. and lost it 5-7. McCutcheons driving was again his strong department, but he had some vital lapses In concentration tow ards the end of each set. Tietjens had a bad patch at errors in the second set, but he impressed with the speed with which he covered the court, getting from the back comer to the net on the other aide of the court in lightning fashion. . Brooks beat J. Legge, of Wellington. 6-2. 6-0. with his service going particularly well—his first in time after time. After that he made some of his usual unaccountable errors, but his forehand was also a strong weapon. The tali, slim Halligan still looks as if he has a good chance of winning the title. Yesterday he beat u. Gloyn. of Manawatu, 6-2, 6-3. Thomson lost only two games to M. Wadham (Wairarapa), and Bird did not lose a game to J. King (Otago). However, the very powerful looking Simmonds beat the courageous I. Stanton, of Canterbury, only 6-3, 7-5. In the girls’ under 19 quar-ter-finals today E. Terry (Waikato), seeded first, will play L. Raisebeck (Auckland), seventh; A. Glenie (Auckland), third, will meet D. Smith (Canterbury). fifth; S. Clement (North Shore), second .will meet B. AspJin (Auckland), sixth; and E Cavaye (Hutt Valley), fourth, L. Smith (Auckland). The under 17 boys’ quarterfinals will be N. McAffer (Wellington), first, v. Mitchell; B Dibley (Auckland), third, v. R. Potter (Auckland), eighth, D. Cassidy (North Shore), second, v K. Woolcott (Hutt Valley), unseeded; and O. Parun (Wellington). fourth, v. D. Scott (Auckland), sixth. Three-set Matches Dibley. Woolcott. and Scott Were taken to three seta in the third round yesterday. It looked for a time in the third set as if P. Shorter, of Auckland. would beat Dibley. These two plavers practise together a great deal, and know one another's games well, but Dibley is usually the stronger. Yesterday they were veryeven. Shorter gained a 4-1 lead tn the third set before Dibley caught up with steady play, but Shorter also led 6-5 before Dibley clinched the set. 6-6. Some of the play was not very convincing, especially tn some volleying rallies at the net. when neither seemed to attempt to pass the other, and Dibley even resorted to some underarm serving. Mitchell beat Thom, mainly because he adapted his play to the wind much better. He was hitting hard into the wind, dragtong his shots with it; his whole approach was a shrewd one and his control remarkable. There was a similar pattern when Miss Johnston beat Miss Vereoe. Tne gusty conditions troubled both, but Miss Johnston handled them better and anticipated just where the ball was going to land in spite of the wind. Th* under 17 girls’ quar-ter-finals will be Mias Johnston v. A. Wiblin (Wellington), sixth; Deidre Keer-Taylor (Auckland), third, v. M ito Kegg (Northland), seventh: C. Fleming (Auckland), first. v. L. Farrell (Hawke's Bay), eighth; and J. Hewitt (Waikato), fourth, v F. Thomson (Canterbury), unseeded. Abbreviations in the results sre as follows: Nth, Northland; N.S.. North Shore: A.. Auckland.
