PACIFIC CABLE

Task Well Up To Schedule (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. The cable ship Mercury is well up to schedule in her task of laying the SuvaHawaii section of the Compac cable. Under the command of Captain G. H. C. Reynolds, the Mercury made a rendezvous with another cable ship, the Retriever, at Suva on Friday and yesterday began laying cable at a rate of five knots a day. The Retriever, commanded by Captain G. T. Robinson, had previously buoyed the cable route and is now acting as a pathfinder. The Merctiry is expected to complete the first part of the cable-laying operations next Thursday, after which she .will return to Britain. She is expected to leave for Suva with a new supply of cable about March 11.
