REACTION TO PACT
Doubt And Anxiety (JV2PA.-Ra«m-Copvright) LONDON. January 23. The signing of the FrenchGerman treaty received prominence and mixed reaction in this morning’s British press. The •’Guardian*” said the treaty ought to be welcomed without restraint but expressed anxiety about President de Gaulle's aims. It spoke of the possibility of Europe becoming a closed community and claimed that such a Europe would have the seeds at a future war. The "Tally Telegraph" said that unless Dr Adenauer had managed to secure from President de Gaulle some real concessions on British entry his precious agreement may not get through the Bundestag. “How bard was he prepared to press? Not to the point of rupture. Whet has be got? It looks like nothing •t all.” The “Dally Express" said: •’lf the French and Germans are really making friends, let Britain rejoice. If France and Germany have decided to quarrel no more. Britain has reason to hope that her troops need never go to Eu npe ’Min In Rome, authoritative sources saio the Italian Government fully understood the value of the French-German treaty but had no interest tn adhering to tt. They said the Government had been kept informed os> the treaty whose sponsors have said It would be open to other States. President de Geuße has been widely criticised to Italy for his attitude to Britteh membership of the Common Market Tn Moscow Taw said the new trestv "marks another step of the French Govemment on the wav to another Munich “Its military orovtsions are sure to rive even more freedom to the West German militarists.” Teas said. "This is a eoltoston to step up the arms race to elose alliance with the Bonn rulers.”
