Emerson Plans To Retire
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ADELAIDE, Jan. 21. The Australian amateur tennis champion. R. Emerson, aged 26, will retire from amateur tennis in two years. Emerson, who won his second national singles title on Saturday, told reporters he planned to stay in amateur tennis another two years before retiring, and would not be interested in a professional offer unless "it was something fantastic."
Emerson said after his win: “I will be after a grand slam (of world amateur titles) now.”

First round results of the business firms' night tennis competition played at South Christchurch Tennis Club's lighted courts this week, were; Treveans v. Taxes 2 L and J. Darby beat Chenery and Davey, 9-4; Withington and J. Darby lost to Kenyon and Davey, 5-9; L. Darby and Withington beat Chenery and Kenyon 9-4. Trevean won. 2 sets to 1. Gold Band v. Public Trust Beatty and Chislom lost to Sinclair and Amos. 7-5; Beatty and Lecomte beat Ockwell and Amos. 9-3; Lecomte and Chislom lost to Sinclair and Ockwell, 1-9. Public Trust won, 2 sets to 1.
Lane, Walker, Rudkin v. Singer Edgar and Strez beat Yagodsenski and Biggs, 8-5; Edgar and Purvis drew with Smith and Biggs, 6-6; Strez and Purvis lost to Smith and Yagodsenski, 5-6. Lane, Walker, Rudkin won, 19 games to 17. Pharmacy v. Tomlinson and Dickson Terry and Todd lost to Harrison and Davidson. 6-8; Searle and Terry beat Davison and Nisbet, 8-6; Todd and Searle lost to Harrison and Nisbet, 3-5. Tomlinson and Dickson won, 2 sets to 1. Taxes 1 v. NA.C. Davey and Mills beat Bryce and McLean, 9-1; Mills and Bruce beat Murphy and Bryce, 8-5; Davey and Bruce drew with Murphy and McLean, 5-5.
