ARMY EXERCISE IN MOUNTAINS
Burnham Section Taking Part

The first infantry brigade group began a realistic exercise in the ranges on the western coast of the Firth of Thames this morning, when they were required to stamp out the activities of “Communist terrorists” who had been parachuted into the area. The Auckland, North Auckland and Hauraki infantry battalions and workshops, and medical units of the brigade (Territorial Army) are being assisted throughout the exercise by a special pioneer section from Burnham, while the SAB. troop—recently returned from Thailand—is acting the role of terrorists.
The exercise will continue till Thursday. Supplies are being parachuted into the mountainous area by the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
The Chief of the General Staff, Major-General L. W. Thornton, will pay a visit to tbe exercise area tomorrow, camping out overnight
Members of the first and second national service intakes, who have ’ recently, joined the battalions, are co-operating with the territorials.
