RAILWAYMAN KILLED

Struck By Rake Of Trucks Injured in a shunting accident early in the morning, a railway man died in the Princess Margaret Hospital shortly after midday on Saturday. He was: Gordon MeKensle Douglas Stewart, aged 58, married, the father of three children, of 158 Chester street, Christchurch. Mr Stewart suffered severe abdominal and leg injuries. He was employed as a lamproom attendant and began work at 8 am. He was found by a fellow worker partly beneath some railway waggons, calling for help, a short time after he was due to start work, said the Chief Stationmaster (Mr S. R. Breach). It is believed Mr Stewart might have stopped in front of moving waggons and been knocked down. There were no witnesses of the accident, said Mr Breach.
