TROTTING Maudella Picked For Sprint At Washdyke

If a fairly hard race over two miles on the first day of the meeting has not left its mark on Maudella, she should prove a difficult rival for the sprinters to match in the Geraldine Handicap at Washdyke today. Although Maudella is noted more for her ability as a stayer, there have been times this season when she has managed 10 furlongs almost as well. All that should be required to put victory within her reach today is a reasonable beginning.

In a capacity field of 20, all off tiie limit, luck in the draw for barrier positions could have a major bearing on tihe result. Maudella has been reasonably fortunate in this direction. She will start from the No. 11 position which mean* she is on the front line. Toby Brigade and Sirrah are other strong form fancies which have fared similarly. Sirrah hag drawn the rails position and Toby Brigade starts near the middle of the front line in No. 9 position. Toby Brigade will be trying to win his third successive race and complete a double at the meeting. He beat the sprinters very convincingly in the corresponding race last Saturday. Sirrah is a newcomer to the meeting. His solid form background includes a last start third in the Rangiora Cup a win in the Waimarte Cup and a sprint victory at Oamaru two starts earlier. At Waimate and Oamaru, Maudella was the runner-up each time so Sirrah’s chance looks very good indeed. RelißbiHty at the start is just as important as racing ability over the shorter distances. For that reason. Flying Blue and King Clovis will be fairly high on the list of fancied runners. So will Lady Charles although her chance will probably depend on how she fares at the start from the second line.

Napoleon Hanover, a win-

ner at the Ashburton trials last Tuesday, has the same problem to overcome. Chief Omar, Hahcove and Thunderbolt, which have all shown fair sprint ability at times, could be the best of the others.

The T.A.B. double on the second day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meet-

ing will be run on the South Canterbury Handicap and the Winchester Handicap. Caiirnbrae, Carver Doon and Moose are expected to battle for honours in the first leg. Storm Waiter is selected to win the Winchester Handicap. But he is unlikely to have things all his own way if Inglemead, Loyal Brigade and Trade Fair race up to their first day form and Aiblins makes an unexpected improvement. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Rosewill and Pukakl Handicaps. Smokey John and Anterior are a fancied combination. There has been fine weather in South Canterbury during the week so the track will be firm and fast. Field* are:—
