LAWN TENNIS R. G. Clarke Survives Match Points

AUCKLAND, January IX R. G. Clarke, of Wellington, probably gained more than a lucky victory against D. G. Campbell (Auckland) when he was awarded a disputed line call with match point against him during their first-round match on the opening day of the New Zealand lawn tennis championships.

Clarke it one at about six players who are in the running for the right to represent Naw Zealand in the Davis Cup matches tater this year. Campbell, ptagting probably the best tennis of bis career, had Clarke in trouble from the start, taking the first set and then leading by two sets to OM.

Clarke evened at two seta each but in the fifth and final set Campbell raced away to lead 5-3 and JV-15 on his own service. He lost the first of these two match points. On the next, after a baseline rally, Clarke hit a ball which appeared to land outside the btoeiine. Campbell made no attempt to play a shot and stopped the ball on his racket but it was not catted out Clarke survived a further match point and fought beck to take the match.

Mica S. Rich, of Canterbury, was another who saved a match point before winning. Down 5-3 against Mrs F. Lobb, she made a good recovery to save the vital point and force her way ahead to win 0-7 tn the third set

B. E. Woolf struggled against L. W. Watkins, of Canterbury, in a kmg five-set match. Woolf had a battle in the fourth set after trailing two sets to one before the rest. Up 5-2 in the fourth set, he allowed Watkins to level and then, after trailing 6-7. eventually took the set 9-7. The fifth set was easier and Woolf won 6-1. J. H. Lockington, playing in his first major tournament of the season, was also taken to five seta. Results:—
