Memorial Avenue

Sir,—l read with some interest, Mr H. G. Galpin’s report on the planting of Memorial avenue, hie aim being simplicity, reetfutaeaa, and contrast in cotour. What has he achieved? The maintenance ot the street with all its scrubby shrubs has now been turned over to the Waimaki Council and it looks as though they could not care less as a great many ot the shrubs and trees are dead, or dying. When the planting time comes round again, let us scrap all this conglomeration and begin again with chestnuts, and some other suitable trees, and make Memorial avenue worthy ot the object for which it was created.—Yours,

J. FULTON. January 7, 1968. [The chairman ot the Waimairi County Council (Cr. J. L CoUigan) arid: “Vandalian has been the cause of the replacement of many ot the trees and tree stakes. Ninety-three trees were replaced during the last planting season and 125 tree stakes were replaced during the last 12 moaths. During the growing seeron the grass in Memorial avenue is cut weekly.”]

Sir,—l, too, am in complete agreement with those who msh to see Memorial avenue planted in large deciduous trees. These trees, wisely spaced, would give great dignity without detracting from the view ot the distent mountain. fa winter they would still tat in sun and not be a frost harard, in mmtDM* coot Mid rartftiL and more able to withstand the hot nor’westora.
