SHORT TIME AT ROLLS
Aero Workers Affected (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, January 11. Half the 33,000 workers of Rolls-Royce, Britain’s leading aero engine manufacturer, are to go on short time. The 16,000 workers affected at three factories would lose up to eight hours a week, the “Daily Mail” reported. The Rolls chief executive, Mr J. Pearson, said today: “We are putting this plan to the unions as an alternative to heavy redundancy. “We hope to get back to normal by mid-year,” he added. The newspaper said Rolls’s labour force bad dropped by more than 6000 in the last year. Factories were working at "half throttle” and shareholders had twice suffered a reduced dividend.
