TROTTING Aiblins And Monapat For Washdyke Double

. Aiblins and Monapat could form the successful com* bination for the TA~B. double on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. Aiblins will meet a small field not very strong in class in the first leg, the John Hole Memorial Handicap, while Monapat will receive strong opposition in the second leg, the two*mile Kerry* town Handicap.

Aiblins, a member of J. H. Winter’s Springston team, broke badly at the start of his race at Addington on January 2. Earlier in the season he showed outstanding form over all distances.

Aiblins, a four-year-old gelding by Stormyway from the New Zealand Oaks winner, Bonnie Castle, can both sprint and stay and provided he makes a reasonable beginning, he should go close to winning. Trade Fair paced his best race for some time in Canterbury when he finished a close third to Carver Doon and Storm Water in the Plumpton Park Handicap at Addington on January 2. He attempted to lead for more than the last mile and it was only in the last few yards that he began to shorten stride. W. R. Butt has him in great order at present, and he should soon return to winning form. Loyal Brigade met trouble in the race won by Carver Poon at Addington and he was not a possibility over the final mile. Before then he had shown sound form and looked to be close to gaining an overdue win. If he receives reasonable luck in the running, he could easily upset calculations on Saturday.

Terrace Dale, a half-sister to Massacre, gained a splendid win in the Mid-summer Handicap at Ashburton on Boxing Day. She has not raced particularly consistently this season, but at times her efforts have been worth while. If she races generously in this event, she could take beating. Rembrandt was a little disappointing when he tired to sixth in the Plumpton Park Handicap at Addington after receiving a perfect run. The distance is two furlongs shorter on Saturday and the pace might not be so strong. He is a smart pacer and looks capable of making a bold showing. Vanese finished sixth at New Brighton on December 1 at her only start this season. She is a fine pacer and could be prominent The others make little appeal, and the pick of them could be Bonnieburn. Monapat is entitled to be one of the favourites for the second leg, the Kerrytown Handicap, after her splendid run from near the tail of the

field for second to Terrace IJale at Ashburton on Boxing Day in the Mid-summer Handicap. Monapat, which can handle any type of track condition, is particularly strong in stamina. Provided she makes a reasonable beginning. she could be hard to beat Lady Charles has had an exasperating run in recent weeks and her last three starts have resulted in second placings. She had little in her favour when she was beaten narrowly by Carver Doon in the Rangiora Cup at her most recent start She will only need to receive reasonable luck in the running to obtain an overdue win. Maudella gained a runaway win in the Reefton Cup, winning by six lengths. She stays well and if S. D. Edge can keep her covered up until the straight entrance, she should outsprint most of her rivals.

King Clovis was a narrow winner in the Greymouth Cup last Saturday. He is an in-

teresting newcomer to this class and could race prominently. Chief Omar, a sprint winner at Rangiora, failed rather dismally over two miles at Ashburton, but that might have been due to the state of the track. The Meadow Chief gelding is very fit at present and he looks capable of another early win. Happy Songster, a double winner at Westport, has had a chance to freshen since then. If the track is very hard, his might not be very bright, but if the sting is out of the going, he could be prominent. Royal Attack, Taurua, Flying Blue, Generator, and Winabob have all been recent winners and they will be solidly supported. However, if Inglemead begins cleanly, she should be too good for them. She has been disappointing lately, but looks well It will not surprise if she wins on Saturday, although Monapat, Lady Charles and Maudella look more reliable propositions.
