MALAYAN STRIKE

14,000 Railway Workers Idle

(N.ZJ’.A.-Reuter—Copt/righi) KUALA LUMPUR. Jan 0 The strike by 14,000 railway, men in Malaya is to continue after a breakdown in peace talks in a marathon meeting which lasted six hours and ended early yesterday. The peace efforts by Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz. of the University of Malaya, the sole mediator, brought no result. Early this morning the railwaymen again started to picket outside the Kuala Lumpur station, which is opposite the railway administration building. Yesterday , as a measure of goodwill, the workers withdrew from the scene. After this failure to bring an end to the 17-day strike, the Malayan Government is said to be considering invoking Article six of the Malayan Constitution which empowers the Malayan Paramount Ruler, on the advice of the Prime Minister. Tunku Abdul Rahman, to declare the railwaymen's work an essential service. Railwaymen would therefore be compelled to return to work immediately. The strike began on December 22.
