BLUE STEEL MISSILE
Dispute On Range
(NZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, January 9. The British Ministry of Aviation last night dismissed as “entirely speculative” Australian reports that tests of the Blue Steel stand-off bomb had proved it could have a minimum operational range of 500 miles. “The Times” said today. The newspaper published the Ministry statement beneath a news agency report quoting authoritative sources in Canberra on the missile’s range.
The sources said in trials at Woomera a year ago Blue Steel achieved “remarkable accuracy” over ranges up to 203 miles.
Subsequent tests had greatly increased this range, they said. “The Times” defence correspondent said the Ministry of Aviation, in dismissing the reports, added that Blue Steel tests were secret.
It was not the Ministry’s policy to issue progress reports on them. A Ministry spokesman had said the statement looked like another example of the intense lobbying that was going on over the future of airborne weapons.
