RACING Determined Best In Mud At Woodville
TM Preu" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH, January 9. Handling die heavy ground much better than be has done in the past, Determined came with a sustained burst to win the “Sonny” Smith Memorial going away on the second day of the Pahiatua Racing Cub’s annual meeting at Woodville today.
It was his first win since he surprised in the Hawke’s Bay Cup last April and as a result of mixed form this season he was fifth favourite in a field of 14, though on the opening day he was a creditable fifth in the Pahiatua Cup.
Determined was towards the rear tin passing the halfmile, where he began to make ground, but he stfll had six ahead of him starting the run home. He summoned a brilliant effort over the final furlorg and beat the pacemaker, Outcome, by a widening length and a half. Outcome appeared set for his first middle-distance win when be was travelling comfortably with a length advantage at the straight entrance and be was further ahead with only a furlong to run. Though be showed no signs Of weakening, he COUld not match the final effort of Determined. Silver Pelt ran his best race since be returned from Australia when he made ground from well back at the straight entrance for third. The favourite. El Jildi, recorded one of his few poor performances. He was ideally-placed early and along the back, but he began to give ground from the half-
mile and beat only four home. The "Sonny" Smith Memorial was the first leg of tl.e TA3. double, which was completed by Harry Lauder in the Ballance Handicap, the return for £1 being £M IQs fid. It was Harry Lauder’s first attempt In open company and confirmed the promise he had shown among the hacks. He was never far from the pace and took charge rounding the turn. He ran on courageously when tackled by Astrid at the furlong and won by half a length. Aqaba, well back early, and wide rounding the turn, ran on strongly foe a close third. Only two favourites were successful, but there were no big surprises, the beet returns being Vigour’s £l2 Is and Riza's £l2 2s. J. S. Robinson, Otaki, was the most successful trainer, winning with Jupete and Determined. Heavy overnight rain persisted for the first half of the programme, but the weather then cleared only to become wet again before the start of the last race. The track was heavy. On-course the totalisator handled £42,768, compared with £46J40 10s. a decrease of £8572 10b. The on-course total for the meeting was £91530. compared with los, a decrease of £679 10s. • h Bold Finish Determined regained his ” best form to win the “Sonny" Smith Memorial Outcome was the pacemaker with a round to go from Tunku.
