Short-Priced Winner
Magician confirmed nearly affl predictions by winning Hie Dunedin Jockey Club's Champagne Stakes ait Wingate! yesterday. Mr H. D. Greenwood’s Faux Tirage colt won decisively by a length and a quarter and paid £1 IQs 6d tor a win and £1 7s for a place. He was Hie shortestpriced winner of the meeting, but that was expected because of his toran. Magician carried £ll4O 10s of a win pool of £2106. ITiis was Magician’s fourth start and his second win. He won Hie Pioneer Handicap on the third day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, and a week earlier he beat all but Hie brilliant Rondabeile in the Welcome Stakes. Magician has now earned £1145.
Trained by K. J. Thomson ait Riccarton, Magician was ridden by C. McDonald. This was also the successful oosnbtnalaon when Shahwan won the Champagne Stakes tor Mir Greenwood in 1956.
Magician may not race again until the Royal meeting ait Riccarton in Fetauary, followed by an autumn campaign ait Trentham. Golden Craze, Belle El Nil, and Msgirswn (three wide) ran in line in the lead for a start in the Champagne Stake*. Then Golden Craze dropped back on the inside and MngfriiMi and Belle El Nil ran abreast in front to the straight Baßybco was trading alongside Gotten Craze, and Eiffel Tower, a stow beginner, was the tailender.
