Manawatu-Wsnganui beat Hawke's Bay In the final of the Mary Bartlett Memorial Trophy for women, and Auckland was strongly placed against Wellington for the Watson Shield for men at the end of the first day's play in the New Zealand Catholic lawn tennis championships. which began in Palmerston North today. Rain late in the morning delayed play in Interprovincial matches. The championships proper will begin tomorrow. Taranaki, the holder of the Mary Bartlett Memorial Trophy since it was given in 1960. was beaten by Hawke'a Bey, 10-1. Manawatu-Wanganul also had an easy win over Waikato. In the final against Hawke's Bay. Manawatu-wanganui won. 11-5. The Wellington-Auckland match for the wataon Shield will be decided tomorrow. Auckland eeema assured of retaining the shield, for It won all nine matches played today in straight sets. (Twelve matches will be played today.)
