Plunging through steep seas with clouds of spray smothering their decks, the three big yachts were leading the record fleet of 42 on the long haul

The 70ft schooner, Astor, skippered by Peter Warner, won the "first leg” of the race when she led the fleet through Sydney Heads into a heavy swell and a 30-knot southeasterly earlier today •Astor turned and made straight out to sea. apparently set on sailing the race wen clear of the coast in the heavy f oin £; S h * wa s cl ”sely followed by Ondlne and Solo, with the Victorian Winston Churchill. and Dina close astern.
