Two grants amounting to £4509 had been approved by the Education Department for improvements and alterations to Avonside Girls’ High School, the secretary (Mr P J. Halligan) told the monthly meeting of the school’s board of governors yesterday. The sum of £1695 was granted for the construction of three additional tennis courts. and £2814 was granted for the conversion of Davis house to a caretaker’s residence, the alteration of a music room and its ajoining classroom into a library, and for other structural alterations.

Work is already in progress on the structural alterations and work on the tennis courts will begin today. The board has agreed to the request of the Christchurch Civic Music Council for the school assembly hall’s seating to help provide accommodation for the 5000 persons who are expected to attend the Royal concert in King Edward Barracks on February 18

The school would supply more than 800 seats provided precautions for their identification and return are taken by the council.
