Women's Softball

CHRISTCHURCH BEATS HAGLEY In the loot round of games before the Christmas recess. Christchurch maintained its good form of the previous Saturday. to defeat the second team in the senior competition, Hagley. comfortably. Monowai had little difficulty in scoring runs against a lethargic Kaiapol side, which was unlucky to lose Its top player and captain. M Hopkins, with an ankle Injury early in the game. Games will recommence on January 12 with an all-day knock-out tournament. Results:— Christchurch 13, Hagley (. Monowai 27, Kaiapol 8. Monowai V. Kaiapol Katapoi, displaying little confidence in the field, could not hold the Monowai batters, the only innings when Monowai did not scone being the third. J. French, on the mound for Monowai, kept the Kaiapol batters subdued, the only hits of the game coming from S. Hudson, a home run by J. Kimber. and a three-base hit by F Hammer.

Kalapoi's leading player, M. Hopkins, was forced to retire with an ankle Injury in the third innings.

Monowai opened its score on a hit by L. Alston, which brought home two runners. Monowai found Its hard drives producing errors, with home runs by J. French and N. Beale, a three-base hit by L. Alston, and a two-base hit by E. Law being the highlights of ths batting. With many more good hits Monowai was not extended to win 27-8.

J French pitched well for Monowai, gaining two strikeouta, giving up three walks and three hits. The top Monowai batter was L. Alston.

Christchurch v. Hagley Hagley took the initiative in the first two innings of .the game when with good base running and taking advantage of any fielding errors, it scored two runs. Hagley scored another run In its fourth Innings on errors, and this was its last run of the game. The highlight of its fielding was a good double play between J. Tisnma and M. Gaskell.

Christchurch failed in Its first two bats and then, taking advantage of erratic pitching and some good hits by J. Partridge. G. Bridgeman. H. Johnson, and a three-base hit by J. Hudson, scored six runs. Facing P Bennett. who replaced L. Honeymao in the fifth innings. Christchurch scored two runs on a home run by G. Bridgeman. Christchurch went further into the lead in the sixth innings with three more runs, and it did not require its laet innings to win comfortably, 13-5. Christchurch outplayed Hagley in all departments. It registered a good double play between L Pariah and J. Phillips, who relayed the ball to H. Johnson to dismiss the runner going to third. J. Partridge batted well for Christchurch for three hits out of three times to bat. LOWER GRADES Results of lower-grade women's softball matches on Saturday were:— Senior Reserve —Western Suburbs 9, Spreydon 8; West Old Girls 18. Monowai 15. Intermediate. Christchurch 36, Western Suburbs 8; Vanguard 20, Linwood 12; United 7, Monowai 0. * Junior —Hagley 28 Templeton Farm 8; West Old Girls 23. Vanguard 8.
