COMPETITION FOR WORK

“Best Educated Will Win” “Those of us who are able to compare the New Zealand system with those in other countries can say that the opportunities for education in New Zealand cannot be equalled anywhere in the world." said Mr W. J. Cartwright, chairman of the Postprimary Schools’ Council, giving the address at the second annual prize-giving of the Mairehau High School Parents at times were not satisfied with certain aspects of New Zealand education. So were teachers, and both were trying to improve it so that all children would find it easier to take their places in life. To those who took full advantage of the education system, there was every opportunity to take up the top positions in this country and overseas. Unfortunately, there were those who did not stay long enough at school to get the maximum benefit, Mr Cartwright said. They could get good positions because there was not a great deal of competition, but competition would come and success would go to those beet qualified and best educated. “Only this afternoon I was on a board considering applicants for positions. We had to reject quite a number because they couldn't measure up to the minimum educational qualifications. That to what is going to happen to all the people of this country sooner or later—those with the best education and qualifications will win," Mr Cartwright said.
