KAWERAU PAPER
New Machine Running
(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Dec. 16
The second newsprint machine at the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company's Kawerau mill began production of saleable newsprint on Saturday. The machine cost £4 million. Mr D. W. Timmis, the company’s managing-director, said the quality of the newsprint from the machine was excellent. “The commissioning of the machine marks the culmination of the company’s £124 million expansion programme," said Mr Timmis. “This has been completed on schedule and reflects great credit on everyone who has been associated with the project.” The machine, which incorporates the latest developments in this type of equipment, is one of the fastest of its type in the world, with a top speed of 300 ft a minute. At full operational capacity, the mill's output of newsprint will exceed 200,000 tons a year, of which more than 60 per cent, will be sold in Australia.
