Vice-Regal The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) has accepted the office of patron of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), according to advice received at last evening’s meeting of the association's council. Mr L. A. van den Bergne, Belgium’s new Minister to New Zealand, arrived in Wellington yesterday on the Johan Van Oldenbamevelt with his wife and 16-year-old daughter, Nicole.—(P.A.) Mr L. K. Jones was elected president of the North Canterbury Grain. Seed, and Produce Merchants’ Association rt the annual general meeting yesterday. He succeeds Mr R. J. Pask. Mr M. Goodwin was elected vicepresident Mr S. J. Macfarlane was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court yesterday by Mr Justice Macarthur. on the motion of Mr I. A Pringle. Cr. W. B. Laing and Cr. J. S. Scott have been appointed to represent the Heathcote County Council on the Heathcote Domain Board, and Cr. Laing on the Christchurch Aged People's Welfare Council

Wing Commander A. L. Partelow, director of radio engineering at R.N.Z.A.F. headquarters, will retire next month after 32 years’ service. —(P.A.)

Captain M. G. Carr, commanding officer of H.M.N.Z S. Philomel, at Auckland, will leave today by air for Singapore where he will relieve Commander N. D. Anderson in command of the frigate Taranaki.—(P_A.)
