Army Before Rugby

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

LONDON, December 13. The life of a football star does not appeal to Tomasi Waqabaca, the "Flying Fijian.’’ says the “Yorkshire Post.” The £6 a week Army private shocked scouts from a leading Rugby League club by saying: “I ar., not leaving the Army. I like it too much.” Tomasi, aged 21, went to Britain from Fiji 12 months ago to join the Ist Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment

and won a reputation as a centre three-quarters. He has twice been selected to play for the Army. Scouts from the Warrington Rugby League Club saw him play for his regiment against the Royal Signals and talked to him about turning professional. Tomasi said: "I am far too happy in the Army to think of leaving. They told me about all the t-ioney I could earn but I just was not interested."
