RANDOM REMINDER

BRUSH OFF

A man who, on a hot summer’s morning, invites his wife to desist from her labours to enjoy the cooling and nourishing effects of a glass of lager he has poured for her might reasonably expect a touch of gratitude in her reaction; not necessarily abandonment of the scrubbing bucket to fling her wet arms about his neck, not even a rapturous sigh, and a brief speech on how kind and thoughtful he is. But at least a small smile, a word of thanks, an indi-

cation that she is aware of his tender care down through the years they have been married. So it was with some bewilderment that a Fendalton man, after pouring the lager and inviting his wife to drink it, saw’ her leap away and demand that he should not bring that stuff near her. Bewilderment, if only because she had never, in all their long association, showed any inclination to look on any sort of alcoholic beverage with disfavour. Indeed, . . . but that’s another story. After a while, the thing

was explained. Where some men are addicted to drink, nearly all women are addicted to tea. And it so happened that when the lager was offered, this woman was painting a trellis. And it so happened that a few weeks earlier she had attempted, in a moment of wild enthusiasm, to paint the kitchen, or part of it. an attractive shade of red. But as she was a woman, she needed tea. And as she was alone, she made it for herself. And what more natural than that she should put the paint brush into her tea cup?
