ANTARCTIC BASE
Japanese Plan Reopening (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO. December 12. The Japanese ruling Liberal Democratic Party's policy board said today it would shortly present to a plenary session of the Lower House a motion calling for the reopening of the Japanese (Showa) base in the Antarctic in 1964 or 1965 and to make it a permanent Japanese base. A spokesman for the Japanese Education Ministry said the reopening of the base was discussed yesterday by four committees of the policy board and representatives' of the Education Ministry, the Science and Technology Agency, and the Maritime Safety Board. The base had been closed since February this year, when Japan’s last field party was withdrawn. The spokesman said it would require 4700 million yen (about £4.700,000) to reopen the Showa on Ongle Island. Tire spokesman said the present plan called for the construction of a new icebreaker of 5000 tons with a 10,000 horse power engine at a cost of about £3,100,000. and three large helicopters worth about £1.230,000.
The spokesman said as soon as an icebreaker was ready a wintering party of 16 men would be sent to the Antarctic to resume observations.
