PORT WORK HELD UP

Shortage Of Trucks, Men A truck shortage for the fourth day in succession caused delays to cargo work on the Lyttelton waterfront yesterday, with the result that all discharging ships had to halt work at 5 p.m. Ships affected were the Cumberland, Tarawera, Kaimiro and Waikare. Loading vessels were able to continue after tea. The port was also short of labour because of the congestion, with the result that some ships were idle for ail or part of the day. Three ships lay out in the stream following their arrival yesterday, the Kaimanawa, Toronto and Port Pirie. However, three ships sailed yesterday, and by nightfall only the Port Pirie remained at anchor. Two large ships are due today, the Port Lincoln and Whakatane, and two will leave. One ship was due to call at Lyttelton, the Danish passenger - freighter Samoa, will not now call. In spite of the shipping influx, ships have only spent brief periods an anchor and the congestion is less than expected.
