Railway Strike
Sir,—“A Public Service Wife” should know it is the vested interests, not the unions, that are running this country. If the unions were Communist, I, for one, would not support tihem as I abhor unnecessary industrial disputes. I have read both the State Services Bill and Mr Shand's pamphlet, and reach the conclusion that it would depress State services as they were in the 1930’s when they had their salaries cut by 10 per cent. Labour restored the cuts in 1936, so how could they have depressed the State services? Salaries in line with those in private industry? What nonsense, when many firms don’t pass on wage orders. The housewife could balance tihe budget under Labour, but under National it is either time payment or go without. Remember how Mr M. A. Connelly and Mr W. Fox angered the Government when they unsuccessfully sought information on interest rates on time payments. —Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. December 13, 1962.
