Common Market

Sir, —During the last few days, Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer and the President of the Board of Trade have both stated that it would not be “a disaster” if Britain remained outside the E.E.C. These statements demolish one of the main arguments put forward by Eurocrats, who have hitherto prophesied doom for Britain if the people of Britain did not enter the Common Market and (in the words of Sir Arthur Bryant) “let the foreign drillsergeant’s ecenomic metronome make the pace.” In five recent by-elections the people of Britain have shown what they think of a Government which can offer them nothing in the future but the complete surrender of Britain’s national life to foreign domination. Consequently, there are signs that the Government itself is at last becoming aware of the many dangers of permanently and irrevocably shackling Britain to the majority rule of a European collectivist bloc.— Yours, etc., F.C. December 12, 1962.
