Deal To Free Mindszenty
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 11. Hungary was reported today to have offered to let Cardinal Josef Mindszenty leave the country if the United States will drop United Nations charges against its Communist Government.
The 70-year-old Roman Catholic primate of Hungary has been in asylum in the United States Legation in Budapest since October 22, 1956, United Press International reported. He was freed from Communist imprisonment by the liberation fighters that year, but faced new persecution when the revolt was crushed by Russian troops. According to reliable sources. Hungarian diplomats in the United Nations were “sounding out” the United States on the deal.
