WEATHER IN NOVEMBER
Above-average Rainfall From a farming point of view the weather in November was favourable. A welldistributed above-average rainfall combined with higher temperatures and more sunshine than usual kept pastures and lucerne growing on all but the lightest land, says the monthly meteorological report from Lincoln College. There were 251.5 hours of sunshine compared with 230.6 last year and the station mean of 203.4 hours. The highest temperature, 77.8 degrees, was recorded on November 27. This was considerably lower than the maximum temperature for the month last year, which was 85 degrees. There were two days of frost, the same as 1961, and the lowest temperature of 32.2 degrees was recorded on November 10. The rainfall, at 3.02 inches, was considerably higher than last year’s 1.22 inches. The station mean is 1.97 inches. The mean maximum temperature for the month was 66.6 degrees, compared with the station mean of 64.7 degrees. All crops benefited from the rainfall and wheat crops in particular looked better than for several years. Shear, ing of ewes proceeded through the month, usually coinciding with lamb drafting and weaning. Stock health had been good. Milk production from cows had been maintained by use of irrigated pasture in many cases.
Vegetables in home gardens had been easier to tend than for several years, there being few pests and little need for the use of water.
