Cool Betters Record To Win Levin Handicap
"The Press" Special Service
WELLINGTON, December 12. Cool clipped a quarter of a second off Oreka’s Australian and New Zealand record time for a mile and three furlongs of 2min 14',sec when he won the Levin Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Levin meeting today. The time may not be accepted, as in the official programme the distance of the race was described as “About 11 furlongs.” However, there is no reason to believe that the race was less than a mile and three furlongs. Cool was in the middle in the early stages, but improved from the half mile and led for home. He ran on solidly without having a great deal in reserve to beat Determined by three-quarters of a length. Determined was toward the rear early, but made a big run on the outside to share the pace into line, then spoilt his chance by lugging in. Last season Cool had excellent form. He looks likdly to improve, and should keep his record intact during the holiday period. It was Determined’s best performance for some time and suggested that he. too. will be a force to contend with in immediate engagements. Although El Jildi was two and a half lengths away third, it was a promising performance at his first attempt since the Wellington, spring meeting. Stitch and ‘Astronaut battled on for fourth and fifth without appearing likely to overhaul the major place-getters. The double was completed by Home On The Range, which led throughout in the McDonald Memorial Handicap The return for £1 was £7 13s 6d. Home On The Range was always galloping well and won by a length and a quarter from Cattle, which was last at the half mile. 'Sand Boy did not begin with his usual brilliance, but he worked into a handy position at the half mile and appeared sure of second inside the furlong until Cattle emerged from the ruck. Waitoa made ground for fourth and That's That after getting a poor run early, ran on for fifth. Favourites had a good day. In addition to Cool and Home On The Range, Royal Ranson and Khurjen also were successful Training honours were shared by J. W. Kendall Carterton (Monetary and Home On The Range), and P J. Mosely, Hawera (Princess Sahran and Khurjen). The Hawera stablemates were ridden by the stable apprentice, R. 1 Thompson, who was the only rider with more than one success. The weather was fine and the track was hard and fast. There was a good attendance Splice Dwells Splice lost six lengths at the start of the Levin Handicap and Regal Dignitary made the pace through the straight. A round from home he had been joined by Astronaut and Return Fare, with Studio trailing. Then came Tom Foolum, Cool, Kilroy. El Jildi, Determined. Splice. Capless and Stitch. Return Fare went slightly ahead along the back but at She half-mile she was joined by <
Astronaut and Tom Foolum. There was a short gap then to Cool (pulling hard). Studio, Kilroy, El Jildi, Stitch and Determined, clear of Regal Dignitary and Splice. The field bunched coming to the turn, where Determined had made a run to be with Tom Foolum and Cool and El Jildi was third. Stitch was was next and Studio was making little impression. Cool and Determined drew away, with Cool running the distance out best to win by three-quarters of a length. Two lengths and a half away, El Jildi was third. Sitch was fourth, just ahead of StudioThen came Tom Foolum, Kilroy. Astronaut. Return Fare, Capless and Splice with a gap to Regal Dignitary at the rear. All-the-way Win Home on the Range began brilliantly and Idd ail the way in the McDonald Memorial Handicap. Aratiatia, Capper Joy and Gold Splice dwelt at the start. Home on the Range was followed early by Misguided, Trim Laddie, Sampler, Fine Ridge and Sand Boy ahead of Graziioeo, Waitoa and That's That. At the half-mile Home on the Range was attended by Sand Boy then came Misguided, Grazioso, Trim Laddie. Sampler, Gold Splice and That's That with Cattle at the rear. That's That improved on the home turn and followed Home on the Range, Sand Boy and Misguided into line. Grazioso, Trim Laddie and Waitoa were next. Home on the Range did not look likely to be overhauled, and won by a length and a quarter from Cattle, which finished fast to beat Sand Boy by a similar margin. Waitoa was fourth. Then came That's That, Trim Laddie, Sampler, Misguided Aratiatia and Copper Joy. Gold Splice was last. Results:—
